Curriculum Intent
To Rebuild Safety and Trust
We provide a calm, therapeutic, relational environment where pupils feel secure enough to return to learning. Our curriculum is structured to reduce anxiety, build positive relationships and remove the barriers that have previously prevented engagement.
To Restore Confidence
Many of our pupils arrive believing they cannot succeed. Our curriculum intentionally offers small steps, clear routines, targeted support and regular celebration of progress. We aim for every learner to recognise their strengths and see themselves as capable, resilient individuals.
To Provide High-Quality Learning
We deliver a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum adapted to the needs of individual pupils. Core subjects are taught alongside therapeutic, vocational and enrichment opportunities to meet the whole-child’s needs. Individual learning plans ensure work is accessible yet challenging.
To Develop Social and Emotional Skills
We intentionally teach self-regulation, communication, problem-solving and emotional literacy so that pupils can thrive both in education and the wider world. Therapeutic approaches are embedded throughout the day.
To Prepare for Next Steps
Whether transitioning back into mainstream, moving into specialist settings, or progressing towards exams and accreditation, we tailor pathways to each pupil’s goals. We ensure every learner leaves with qualifications, confidence, and a clear plan for the future.
To Champion Inclusion and Remove Barriers
We work closely with families, schools and professionals to ensure pupils are understood, supported and included. Our curriculum actively tackles disadvantage and builds equity, ensuring every child receives the opportunities they deserve.
Curriculum Implementation
At NewHeart Learning, our curriculum is implemented through a carefully structured, therapeutic and relational approach that meets the needs of SEMH and EBSA learners. We prioritise safety, predictability and strong relationships, recognising that pupils must feel secure before they can access learning. Lessons are delivered in small groups with high staffing ratios, enabling personalised support and responsive planning.
We use clear routines, visual timetables, regulated transitions and trauma-informed strategies to reduce anxiety and promote emotional stability. Teachers adapt the curriculum using individual learning plans and regular assessment to ensure pupils are challenged appropriately without becoming overwhelmed. Therapeutic approaches, such as nurture principles, Zones of Regulation, emotion coaching, and CBT informed strategies are embedded throughout the school day.
Enrichment, outdoor learning and vocational pathways provide practical, hands-on experiences that build confidence, skills and motivation. Attendance, engagement and wellbeing are monitored closely and shared with families and professionals, ensuring joined-up support. Staff receive ongoing relevant CPD, safeguarding and therapeutic training to maintain consistency and quality across the provision.
Curriculum impact:
The impact of our curriculum is measured through academic progress, personal development, emotional wellbeing and readiness for the next stage of education. Pupils at NewHeart Learning make gains in confidence, attendance, engagement and self-regulation. Through therapeutic relational practice, we aim for students to become more resilient, more reflective and more able to manage their emotions and behaviour.
Academic progress is tracked using baseline assessments, formative checks and individual learning plans. Pupils work towards appropriate accreditation, including functional skills, unit awards, GCSEs or vocational qualifications, depending on their personalised pathway. We aim for reintegration success, increased attendance and reduced anxiety are key indicators of the curriculum’s effectiveness.
We gather feedback from pupils, families and professionals and use this to refine our practice. By the time they leave NewHeart Learning, pupils are better equipped academically, and emotionally, with a clear plan for their future steps—whether mainstream return, specialist placement or post-16 pathways.
